Are we, as some might say, motivated by a desire to save our off-spring?
Yes, we have the desire to save and help those whom are near us, and we would do almost anything to help them do better in life.
Must there always be some sort of intrinsic reward for doing good?
I believe there may be, we have our social standing and even our genes pulling for certain things that can occur.
Mr. Otis once said, "That having integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching." If this is so, and no one knows when we have done good, would you still do good?
It depends on the situation, of course, and how much good you would have to do. Also, since we have that special quirk of feeling all happy inside when we have done something, that might also have an effect.
"Delayed reciprocal altruism", seems like a gamble - back to game theory, any way. Does this seem to make sense to you. That is that we act out of a desire to have what we have done being done to us?
If we desire something out of someone, we set ourselves up so that the person that has that something feels indebted to us so that they feel that they must help. It is a use of different peoples strengths and how they decided to use them for their advantage.
Are we ever being truly "selfless" when committing an act of altruism?
No, we have many different reasons to commit that act; some of them are actually in our genes. “ Was I really seeking good, or just seeking attention?” As said by Idina Mendelez, the Wicked witch in the Broadway play Wicked, this is a basic quirk of nature, and seems to help us feel righteous.
What might be the social/political implications for there being a gay gene?
Some people believe that that means that they are all right, that it is not something wrong with the body. This reminds me of X-men, a gene that is viewed as horrid by the rest of society, and some of them want to be cured, while others believe they are they way they are meant to be. Anywho, other people believe that others will begin to view being gay as a defect in a person, and that they people who are are almost like they are diseased. This may have a good affect, being that there is a reason, a natural reason why people act the way they do, and also a bad affect, being that it is treated as a defect, and that it needs to be dealt with. This research does not really help or hinder either side unequally, in fact it balances the actions even more. People might begin to try to have tests done on their children, and may begin to discriminate upon the people who are gay.
Explain why it is so challenging for people that are already over-weight to lose their weight.
The fat cells that are created after teenage years can not be destroyed by any other means then Liposuctoin.
What is the significance of leptin for weight loss?
Leptin is a hormone produced in the body that makes you feel like eating less. Unfortunately, many obese people have become resistant to it
Explain why we now know that environment is more important to obesity than is genetics.
The ability to have food readily at your command has increased peoples chances of being obese. Mainly in societies that are developed., there is no need to do many difficult activities.
Provide some advice to a friend that is trying to lose weight. Provide at least five pieces of advice.
1. Willpower is going to be needed
2. It willnot go down all at once
3. Strict diet
4. Three meals a day
5. Excercise
In terms of culture, why do you suppose that the experience of teen-age intercourse (see pp. 376-7) is so much lower for Asian and Middle Eastern youth?
Sex has become a major part of society for the American culture. Also when Britain was teaching about sex ed, they used to use really graphic movies.
Explain why so few teen-agers practice safe-sex.
Many teenagers are misinformed about what should and should not be done, and what is and is not safe. “Understanding Sexual Orientation”
Does homosexual behavior always indicate homosexual orientation? Explain.
Not always, many people, especially teenagers, go through times that they feel like they an not know themselves. They would wan to try new things and see how they work out.
Provide three notions of biological causes of sexual orientation (see pp. 381-3)
1. In the hypothalamus, a certain section of cells is thinner if the person is straight
2. There has been a gene reported in fruitflies that causes homosexuality.
3. prenatal hormones may also affect it.
Why does it matter at all whether or not there is a physiological reason for sexual orientation? (Opinion question, but be sure p. 383)
Some people may believe that homosexuality would be a disease, and should be cured, which would cause social and political unrest.
This is a good song that has to do with altruism-
from the Broadway musical, WICKED
